Recap for Blog 41- Suddenly everyone knows!: After The Scan, Zani and Jake finally phone the grandparents to be with their momentous news. Zani, however, desperately needs to share her excitement with one more person …
She is at the front desk when I arrive, and can immediately tell that something is up.
“What? What’s up? Tell me! I can see you are bursting with news …”
“I want to show you something … but now I’m not sure if I’m being insensitive. That it may upset you.”
“Oh, for Pete’s sake, Zani. Don’t be silly, darling child,” she laughs, as she takes my elbow and ushers me to our table under the tree in the garden. “Out with it! What is it?”
So, out come the grainy, grey images and there we sit, staring at the most perfect little body with the most adorable little face.
”Oh, Zani, isn’t it precious?”
“Vee, did you know that a baby practises eating while in utero? In the first trimester it absorbs fluid through the skin and in the second trimester (where this little one is now) Baby can swallow the amniotic fluid, pass it through the gut and kidneys and pass it back into the amniotic fluid as perfectly sterile urine!”
“My word, I didn’t know that! What infinite wisdom is behind creation!”
“I’ve never been an especially spiritual person but, Vee, this little one is giving me a bit of a wake-up call! There is no way that a big bang could have figured out this sterile urine business, never mind continuously shaping perfect little faces with twisted veins inside an umbilical cord.”
“I couldn’t agree with you more. The more I learn the more I fall in love with God.”
“Vee, I have to dash – but are you sure that all of this is not upsetting you?”
”No, don’t be silly! I love being part of your pregnancy,” she gets up to hug me. “But drive carefully now, you hear? You have precious cargo.”
Back at work, all the girls in the office ooh and aah along with me, especially because they didn’t even know I was pregnant! It is time, too, of course, to let the boss know and to find out about maternity leave.
